Triptych Poster

This poster series explores mental health and resilience through the empowering lens of Michelle Obama, using her voice to challenge perfectionism and normalize struggle as part of the human experience. By highlighting themes of failure without shame, inner strength, and collective support, the triptych aims to inspire audiences to view resilience not as the absence of hardship, but as the courage to keep moving forward.

Sketches

My initial sketches began with the intention to advocate for mental health by visually representing the emotional journey many people experience. I wanted to highlight how easy it is to become stuck in the “fail” stage, where struggles and setbacks feel overwhelming and how difficult it can be to imagine growth beyond that point.

Early Versions

In my first draft, I illustrated the journey from overthinking to failure to growth, but ultimately chose to take the project in a different direction. I wanted a trusted, influential figure to anchor the message, so I selected Michelle Obama for her integrity and positive public presence. Using her quote and a bold, impactful font helped strengthen the campaign’s message of resilience and emotional growth.

Early Versions

In my second draft, I introduced a ripped-paper texture to complement the hand-drawn pencil style and create a more tactile, organic feel. This addition helped ground the quotes and added visual depth to the layout. However, I still wasn’t satisfied with the header design, the typography didn’t feel strong enough or cohesive with the overall message, so I continued refining the concept.

Final Project

For my final design, I refined the layout by moving the header to the top, allowing the portraits to breathe while still maintaining strong visual hierarchy. I incorporated a clear CTA for Mental Health America to ground the campaign in real support and resources. The bold header font adds impact without overwhelming the illustration, creating a balanced, cohesive final composition that strengthens both the message and the overall aesthetic.

Intent

This triptych visually narrates the emotional arc of Think → Fail → Grow, using expressive pencil portraits to depict resilience and transformation. Each panel captures a different stage, of reflection, vulnerability, and renewal by showing how struggle becomes the foundation for personal growth. Together, they form a powerful reminder that progress is a process shaped by both doubt and determination.
